However, when Jack’s time came, his lifestyle of deceit and trickery caught up with him. He found himself barred from heaven due to his evil deeds and also from hell, as he had struck a deal with the devil. In this state, Jack wandered the earth forever in search of a resting place.

To light his way during his endless wandering, Jack used a hollowed-out turnip, which he filled with a glowing ember from hell. This makeshift lantern became known as “Jack’s Lantern” and, later, “Jack-o’-lantern.”

This lantern inspired a tradition in Ireland and Scotland of carving turnips and potatoes into lanterns to ward off wandering spirits on All Hallows’ Eve, which later became Halloween.

When Irish immigrants arrived in America, they discovered that pumpkins were more readily available and larger, making them the perfect canvas for carving spooky faces. Thus, the jack-o’-lantern was reborn in its iconic pumpkin form, and that’s how we got the Jack-o’-lanterns we know today.
