What Is Pumpkin?

Halloween Pumpkin Recipes

At its core, a pumpkin is a round, typically orange fruit (yes, it’s a fruit!) that belongs to the gourd family. Its thick, ribbed skin conceals a sweet, vibrant orange flesh that’s versatile and delicious. Pumpkins thrive in the cool, crisp days of fall, making them a perfect representation of the season’s bounty.

Why Is Pumpkin Associated with Halloween?

The tradition of carving lanterns from pumpkins on Halloween comes from an Irish myth known as Jack of the Lantern. Centuries ago in Ireland, there lived a man named Stingy Jack. He was famous for his deceit and trickery, even outwitting the devil himself.

One fateful night, the devil paid Jack a visit, aiming to claim his soul. However, clever Jack managed to outwit the devil and trap him as a coin. He promised to free the devil but set conditions to save his own soul so the devil would never claim it.

However, when Jack’s time came, his lifestyle of deceit and trickery caught up with him. He found himself barred from heaven due to his evil deeds and also from hell, as he had struck a deal with the devil. In this state, Jack wandered the earth forever in search of a resting place.

To light his way during his endless wandering, Jack used a hollowed-out turnip, which he filled with a glowing ember from hell. This makeshift lantern became known as “Jack’s Lantern” and, later, “Jack-o’-lantern.”

This lantern inspired a tradition in Ireland and Scotland of carving turnips and potatoes into lanterns to ward off wandering spirits on All Hallows’ Eve, which later became Halloween.

When Irish immigrants arrived in America, they discovered that pumpkins were more readily available and larger, making them the perfect canvas for carving spooky faces. Thus, the jack-o’-lantern was reborn in its iconic pumpkin form, and that’s how we got the Jack-o’-lanterns we know today.

Today, the pumpkin is synonymous with Halloween, and its uses go far beyond carving. It’s a staple ingredient in fall dishes, desserts, and beverages that capture the essence of the season.
